Deep thought

Dude, Dances with Wolves is such a rip off of Avatar. Kevin Costner could have at least made the special effects better. The buffaloes didn’t even look real.

This is as cynical as one can get in regards to movies. But given my utter contempt for Sandra Bullock and The Blind Side, today I side with the cynics. Just watch.

Here it is – the first annual Oscar running diary by B. I have a couple Fat Weasel Ales, a 10-year-old Toshiba non-HD tv, and a taco salad from Tacos Al Pastor in San Jose. Most importantly, I have the remote close by just in case a Lost commercial appears and I have to make an abrupt channel change. No spoilers in this house. Guest appearances by B’s patient girlfriend, Sarah, throughout tonight’s telecast.

5:30 And we’re off! Cue the extremely dramatic music and the curtain opens with all the actor/actress nominees on stage. Hey, it’s the girl from All About Steve! And the guy from Facts of Life! That was weird actually…

Oscar Predictions from J

Best Picture:
Up in the Air —  The stars will align and the truly best movie of the year will finally win the Oscar for once.
Directing:
Kathryn Bigelow — I am with B, she was totally robbed for Point Break in 1991. I mean, Silence of the Lambs wasn’t that memorable, was it???
Actor in a Leading Role:
Jeff Bridges and George Clooney — Second tie in Oscar history.
Actress in a Leading Role:
Anyone but Sandra Bullock. I think the other movies you’re in during the same year should have some weight in deciding whether or not you get the golden statue. I mean, you can’t make All about Steve and still, in any way whatsoever, compete for an Oscar. I’m sorry, but someone has to draw the line somewhere.
Best Documentary:
Food Inc. — In all seriousness, this is an incredible movie, which will draw people’s attention to a very urgent problem in this country.

And the nominees are…

Oscar nominations were just released a few minutes ago. The best picture nominees, which have now been expanded to include 10 films, are:

An Education
Avatar
The Blind Side
District 9
The Hurt Locker
Inglorious Basterds
Precious
A Serious Man
Up
Up in the Air

For a complete list of nominations you can go here. Of the 10 films, I think the competition for the top award is really between Avatar, Hurt Locker, and Up in the Air. But it is good to see Basterds on the list because I thought it was quite original.

Any thoughts on this list?
